Chherna Routes - Graduation Thesis Project

The project revolves around the lives of the Thakur community who live in a small village in the Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh called Chherna. It deals with their close relationship with animals and often see them as very much part of their community. Their interaction with nature, self sufficient lifestyle and knowledge systems are interesting to delve into.

Chherna is a beautiful village on the mountains along the Uhl river and located at the perfect height for snow. The people in the village are extremely warm and hospitable. Through personal experiences there, I formed an intense connection with the landscape, people and animals. By incorporating these aspects in my work and with an even bigger obsession with wool, the outcome aims at capturing Chherna in all its rawness and brilliance through wool as an integral medium of expression.

Through this project, I hope to bring a different perspective of the Himachali people to the urban scenario. I have made efforts to not try and take away from the rawness of their culture but also look at it from my perspective as an artist. The final tapestry is a culmination of my insights and viewpoint of Chherna, keeping in mind their stories and anecdotes.

Having said that, the works are open to interpretation but also constantly pull the viewer back to their unique identity through small visual inferences. Through my explorations and expression, the intention is to build the curiosity of the viewer and making them question similarities and differences of the urban and rural lifestyle. The rural people are very much a part of us and our community as global citizens.
